Dr. Sri Mulyani Indrawati

Her Excellency Dr. Sri Mulyani Indrawati was born in Bandar Lampung on August 26, 1962. She completed her tertiary education and obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Indonesia in 1986. She then pursued further education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, United States, and obtained a Master of Science in Policy Economics in 1990. Upon the completion of her master’s degree, she soon received a Ph.D. in Economics in 1992.

Dr. Sri Mulyani’s expertise lies in research on Monetary Economics, Banking, and Labor Economics. In early October 2002, she was elected as the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), representing 12 countries in Southeast Asia (Southeast Asia/SEA Group). Since November 1, 2002, she has represented the 12 SEA Group member countries at the International Monetary Fund.

On December 5, 2005, Dr. Sri Mulyani was appointed Minister of Finance. During her time in this role, she achieved tremendous success, including stabilizing the macroeconomy, maintaining prudent fiscal policy, reducing borrowing costs, managing debt, and instilling confidence in investors. She led the reform of the Ministry of Finance, resulting in many fundamental changes.

She was named Asia’s best Finance Minister for 2006 by the Emerging Markets Forum on September 18, 2006, at the World Bank and IMF Annual Session in Singapore. She was also selected as the 23rd most influential woman in the world according to Forbes magazine in 2008 and the 2nd most influential woman in Indonesia according to Globe Asia magazine in October 2007. Dr. Sri Mulyani was named the best Minister of Finance for 2006 by Euromoney magazine and became Minister Best Finance in Asia in the same year by the Emerging Market Forum.

In 2008, she served as the Acting Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs after Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dr. Boediono was appointed as the Governor of Bank Indonesia. Then, on June 1, 2010, she became the Managing Director of the World Bank. On July 27, 2016, President Joko Widodo appointed her as Minister of Finance again in the Working Cabinet.

In December 2018, Dr. Sri Mulyani Indrawati was selected as the “Best Minister in the World” at the World Government Summit in Dubai. Still, in the same year, in October 2018, Global Markets chose her as the “Finance Minister of the Year – East Asia Pacific.” This title was awarded during the IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bali. In social organizations, she serves as Co-Chair of the Pathways for Prosperity Commission on Technology and Inclusive Development with Melinda Gates. She is also Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum on ASEAN and sits on the Board of UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited Initiative.

In 2019, Sri Mulyani was again named the best finance minister in the Asia Pacific in 2019 by the financial magazine FinanceAsia. This award from FinanceAsia was received three years in a row after previously being received in 2017 and 2018. In August 2019, she was elected as Chair of the Association of Indonesian Islamic Economic Experts for the 2019-2023 period.

On October 23, 2019, Dr. Sri Mulyani Indrawati was re-elected to serve as Minister of Finance in the second term of President Joko Widodo’s administration. This position is Sri Mulyani’s third position as Minister of Finance in a different cabinet.
